With every new Marvel trailer comes endless fan theories, and Avengers: Endgame is no different.
Since the trailer dropped last week, fans have dissected it for clues of what the upcoming movie has in store for the MCU and its heroes.
One interesting theory is that the main antagonist won’t be Thanos, but death itself—or rather herself.
Fans speculate that Lady Death, a prominent character in the Marvel comics as a romantic interest/obsession for Thanos, would join the MCU since Helena first appeared in Thor: Ragnorok. Some fans expect Helena to play a larger role in the upcoming Marvel films, even predicting she is Lady Death herself (Thor did refer to Helena as only his half sister in Infinity War, for the record).
Yet with Helena defeated at the end of Ragnorok, her return seems unlikely (as much as we’d love to see Cate Blanchett pop up again as part of Endgame).
Reddit user Reinheart123 offered another possibility, with Helena gone: perhaps Helena’s mother, aka Death, will appear.
Notably, Marvel didn’t introduce Lady Death as a motivator for Thanos in Infinity War, instead presenting him as acting on his own accord and (twisted) belief system. So, adding her now may confuse the plot too much, but it could also present the Avengers with their greatest foe yet.
We’ll just have to wait until April to see, or at least until the next trailer drops.
