To kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mattel is celebrating Anna May Wong — known as a fashion icon and trailblazer in Hollywood — with the first Asian American doll in the Barbie Inspiring Women Series.
Born Wong Liu Tsong, Wong achieved fame after her role in Shanghai Express in 1932 and became the first Asian American to lead a U.S. television series with The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong in 1951. She continuously broke barriers during her film and television career and paved the way for aspiring Asian Americans in the industry.
The Anna May Wong Barbie’s dress is inspired by Wong’s iconic costume in the 1934 film Limehouse Blues. The red gown features a metallic golden dragon design and a sheer cape with a draped neckline. The doll also features Wong’s signature chic bangs, smokey eye shadow, and gold heels to complete the look. Barbie worked closely with Wong’s niece, Anna Wong, to ensure the doll captured Wong’s legacy accurately.
The 12.75-inch doll can be displayed with the included stand or in its collector’s window box, which features the Inspiring Women Series logo on the front and a full bio of Wong on the back.
As part of the launch, Barbie will facilitate a $25,000 Barbie Dream Gap donation to Asian American LEAD, a non-profit organization supporting low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth through educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities.
