Thousands of fans boarded Funko Airways over the weekend at New York Comic Con (NYCC), including the fans and collectors who stopped by Mondo’s terminal, which featured posters, vinyl, and collectibles to fulfill all sorts of fandom needs.
What would a Mondo con appearance be without some collectible launches? At the show, Mondo first launched its new Mirage Variant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Soft Vinyl Figures and Blood Moon Variant An American Werewolf in London figures. The vinyl on sale included Pixar’s Coco, Up, and Ratatouille; Tron: Legacy; Scavengers Reign; and more.
While Mondo was selling some hot collectibles, posters, and vinyl at the show, the brand also showed off upcoming releases, including the Urban Aztec King Ghidorah, which is coming out later this year.
“The studios are starting to realize that if you find people who understand how to stylize, how to iterate in a way actually creates a new path,” said Peter Santa-Maria, senior creative director at Mondo. “The Urban Aztec Ghidorah is an example of that. Toho was very protective of Godzilla and all those icons forever, and they allowed us to start exploring it with my Godzilla design a few years ago, and it opened the floodgates. Now we’re able to work with Jesse Hernandez and James Groman, and push these characters and see them in a new light.”
One of the biggest spotlights of Mondo’s innovation in the realm of collectibles is the Nightmare Vessels. Nightmare Vessels contain an action figure and accessories from a horror movie, but the containers themselves are also perfect for display. Mondo officially launched the collection at NYCC with the Halloween II Nightmare Vessel, which features a Michael Myers action figure inside the pumpkin skull from the poster of the movie. It also teased a Nightmare Vessel for An American Werewolf in London, which features two figures inside of the aforementioned werewolf’s head. The An American Werewolf in London Nightmare Vessel is available now at mondoshop.com.
“We wanted to try to figure out a way to bring fun and play back to high-end collectibles,” Santa-Maria said. “You can’t get a Nightmare Vessel and not have the play experience opening. It’s just fun. A lot of times, we make these killer 1:6-scale figures, and you open it, and it’s very precious, and you’re just very careful with it, and you get a good pose, and you pose it, and you’re happy with it. But the idea is that we can apply the sensibility of play to a premium collectible.”
Mondo also announced its upcoming slate of collectibles at its Mondo X NYCC panel on Friday. Some of the biggest reveals include 1:6-scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures and some of the upcoming Ghostbusters action figures. Mondo also teased upcoming collaborations with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Gargoyles, A Goofy Movie, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Naruto Shippuden, and Alien.
However, this is just the beginning of Mondo’s plans for the year ahead. More announcements are still to come, with new vinyl, posters, and collectibles. While we don’t know what’s next, we will be preparing our wallets in the meantime.
