The nominations for the Oscars are out, and surprise, it’s the same old schtick: The heavy-hitters are present, the buzz was correctly placed, and the men are … not women.
And while it’s nowhere near last year’s ceremony in terms of fandom (where Marvel and Spider-Man became Oscar winners), some of fandom’s best still found their place in this year’s nominations.
The Academy revealed its nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards this morning, with Joker leading the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Original Score, and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix’s performance. 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood each received 10 nominations. Parasite received six nominations, including Best Picture, making it a banner year for director Bong Joon-Ho and history in the making for South Korean cinema.
Little Women also received six nominations, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay for Director Greta Gerwig, but Gerwig and several other female directors of the year’s bests were notably left out of the all-boys nominations for Directing.
In fandom news, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received three nominations (Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Original Score), and Avengers: Endgame and The Lion King each received a nod in Visual Effects, as well. Writer-director Rian Johnson received an Original Screenplay nomination for Knives Out, the only nomination for the crowd-pleasing whodunnit.
Disney animation came up surprisingly short-handed despite multiple blockbuster releases. Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2 received nominations in the Original Song category, but Queen Elsa and friends were completely left out of the Animated Feature Film category. Toy Story 4 is the only Disney commodity present in the category for the studio that received three Animated Feature nominations at the Golden Globes and left without the win.
No need to feel bad for Disney, however. The powerhouse collectively took home 23 nominations. (Reminder: It does own 20th Century Fox now.) Netflix led the studios with 24 nominations, and Sony rounded out third place with 20.
