Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely met with fans in Hall H at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) at 1:35 p.m. ET for a look back on their experience writing the iconic ending.
The screenwriters had tons of behind the scenes anecdotes about writing the movie, which had two runs in theaters and has earned $2.8 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. They discussed everything from the research to the drawing board and all of the scenes that didn’t make into the final edit.
Some highlights include their discussion with physicists to iron out accurate details on the time travel concept and a nostalgic photo of the whiteboard they used in 2016 to plan out Endgame’s time heist scene.

They also announced that they’d be heading off to work on the upcoming the Electric State along with the Russo Brothers — the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame — and Andy Muschietti, the director of IT Chapter Two.
Here’s the list of deleted scenes and scenarios that didn’t make the cut:
- Markus and McFeely originally planned for the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to break out of the Hulkbuster in Infinity War.
- Evil villain Thanos (Josh Brolin) was also going to meet The Living Tribunal in Infinity War. The plan was for Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to blow his mind-scape during a fight and send him flying through the universe to end up facing the Living Tribunal, who would judge him as guilty.
- In an earlier draft of one of the movies, the screenwriters planned for Thanos to fight a massive serpent to take Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) Stormbreaker axe.
- In a deleted scene from Endgame, Rocket (Bradley Cooper) explains the quantum realm to Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). She was also originally going to have a larger role in the finale.
- Markus and McFeely wrote several death scenarios for Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.). Taking Tony’s personality into consideration, Downey, Jr. suggested that his death scene would be more emotional if he was silent during it.
- They created theories that Captain America (Chris Evans) would return the Infinity Stones and meet Red Skull, but the writers didn’t add it to the final script.
- One of the most terrifying scenes — and super extra ones — of Thanos from 2014. In the deleted scene inspired by the comic book series Old Man Logan, the villain travels to the Avengers’ head quarters carrying the corpses of the superhero team from 2012. Talk about rubbing it in.
