She-Ra, Princess of Power is back to save us from the dark forces, leading the way with the brightness of her sword, and 8 feet of princess warrior awesomeness.

New York Comic-Con fans were treated to never-before-seen clips from Dreamworks’ new animated TV series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, during a panel that included executive producer Noelle Stevenson, (author of Nimona and Lumberjanes), Aimee Carrero (voice of She-Ra), Karen Kukuhara (voice of Glimmer), and Marcus Scribner (voice of Bow).

Noelle Stevenson spoke candidly during the panel, sharing how she used the original 1987 series as a stepping board to launch the characters, places and storylines in She-Ra’s new world. Adding that nostalgic fans will find a trove of “easter eggs” in each episode.

The show will explore Andora’s journey of self-discovery as she learns of her new identity as is forced to tackle issues of betrayal, and choose from right and wrong. When Andora stumbles upon a mythical sword, she is transformed into She-Ra Princess of Power, and learns of her calling to defend Crystal Castle from the Evil Horde, a tyrannical totalitarian regime, that has destroyed the quality of life on other planets.

Andora is honored to rise to the occasion to fight and protect the innocent, however she struggles with her guilt over abandoning her childhood friend, Catra, to join the rebellion against her own regime.

Each exclusive clip shown at the panel highlighted the dynamic relationships and unique bonds each character has with one another. The first clip showed the back and forth banter between Andora and Catra as they run a training exercise for the Command. Catra is late for class, and Andora tries to cover for her, but is noticeably annoyed as the drill begins without Catra. Catra swoops in right at the very end and helps Andora out of a hole. There is a strong sense of love and loyalty between the two with a mixture of irritable disapproval.

She-Ra’s princess friends, Mermista, Sea Hawk, Perfuma, and Entrapna.

Another friendship duo the panel introduced is Glimmer and Bow, who have a very sweet, supportive, and playful relationship. Bow adds the  element of comedic flare to the show, and is full of snappy one-liners that break the tension of heavy moments.

The primarily female cast brings a positive and empowering sense of moral compass for young girls, and a very forward-thinking mentality into the script that speaks directly to today’s younger generation. The animation promotes healthy body images by featuring princesses in all shapes and sizes, while remaining true to She-Ra’s distinguishable landscapes and wardrobe.

Each character has his or her own unique sense of style and distinct personality traits that play into interactions with other characters and situations, which was very evident in a clip where Andora and her friends are planning out a mission to infiltrate one of the Horde’s bases. The character’s quirky traits and special abilities are revealed during the mission, creating a playful tone while highlighting their strengths and weaknesses are.

The series will focus on the importance of supportive relationships and the power of friendship as Andora explores the world through the lense of She-Ra. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power comes to Netflix on November 16.
