While we last saw Supergirl and her DEO crew defeat Reign and the Worldkillers at the end of season three, it seems like the fourth season still won’t be smooth sailing for Kara Zor-El and her friends. This time, it’s likely villains from DC Comics’ Green Lantern will descend on National City.
While this season will be Mon-El and Winn-less (of which I’m still not over), more new characters are arriving to assist Kara save the day, such as Brainy returning from last season and the original superhero Dreamer. In addition to new heroes joining the DEO, apparently we are getting some new villains, taken straight from the comic books. A new report from Spoiler TV recently revealed the script titles for the fifth, sixth, and seventh episodes of The CW series, and each title gives us a tiny hint about what fans can expect in season four, including the identities of these new villains.
Episode five is titled “Parallax,” strongly hinting to some Green Lantern themes. Parallax is most notably the villain from DC’s Green Lantern comics, with great fear-creating and mind-control abilities (as in, strong enough to overpower Superman) and the ability to change forms and possess people. Parallax will likely be a strong opponent for our DEO heroes this season. The crew facing a fear-inducing villain isn’t too different from when they faced Psi (played by Jane the Virgin’s Yael Groblas) and her psychic fear projection, but Parallax’s powers will likely operate on a much larger scale as he can morph into whatever the hero fears the most. Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist, did explain that this season shows Supergirl as a symbol of hope going against fear as the enemy, so Parallax will fit right in.
Episode six is called “Call to Action” and leans into other real-world issues the fourth season plans to discuss. As for episode seven, the title is “Rather the Fallen Angel.”
“This season they really want to thematically tackle more topical stories that maybe mirror what’s going on with the state of the world and our country,” Benoist told Deadline. “There’s a lot of anti-alien sentiment at the beginning of Season 4 that Supergirl is going to have to grapple with. I think their main premise is that fear itself is a villain and can hope conquer it? Supergirl stands for hope, so we’ll see. I think fear is her biggest opponent yet because it’s more of a wildfire-type emotion.”
Supergirl returns for its fourth season Sunday, October 14 on The CW.
