Taylor Swift released a star-studded music video for her latest single, “You Need to Calm Down,” this morning and it is premium as hell and in tune with what’s necessary.
Not only does it take place in a pastel-hued trailer park, but it is the perfect way to celebrate pride month with its ton of star power from the LGBTQ community, including a drag “pop queen” pageant with RuPaul, cameos from the Queer Eye Fab 5, and Ellen DeGeneres getting tatted up. Swift is notorious for dropping clues in her videos; perhaps DeGeneres’ tattoo, which says “cruel summer,” is a song title hint???
There’s also a reconciliation between Swift and Katy Perry, who’ve had an ongoing feud for years (remember when Perry called Swift a “Regina George in sheep’s clothing?”). The two singers slow dance and hug dressed as a hamburger and fries, which is the only real way to reunite with a frenemy.
The video ends with a message that says, “Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally,” urging viewers to sign a petition supporting the Equality Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity under federal civil rights law.
