Cowabunga, dudes! Grab your friends and some pizza because your favorite turtle superheroes are back on the big screen. The creators of the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) documentary Turtle Power are crowdfunding for a sequel full of never-before-seen content fans are sure to love.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Evolution, Mutation, & Reboot is a four-hour deep dive into the history, evolution, and mutation of the iconic Turtles over its 40-year run. The film includes unseen interviews from the original documentary, behind-the-scenes footage, and new content from recent TMNT projects. Rather than wait for a major studio to fund and distribute the film, independent film studio Definitive Film is taking it straight to the fans through an epic Kickstarter campaign with a projected 2026 release date.
Definitive Film digs into its archives from 15 years of working with TMNT to find the bits and pieces that show how unique and meaningful the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are to so many. The documentary includes the TMNT origin story as told by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in the same spot where they first dreamt up the turtles 40 years prior. Campaign backers can also access a radical range of “Into the Sewer” bonus features, including home videos inside Playmates Toys meetings and on-set antics during the live-action adaptation mutation of the green machine.
Alongside the film, fans can access new retro-style Turtles action figures modeled after early, never-released concepts from Playmates Toys. As an homage to TMNT’s 40 years of mayhem, creators Eastman and Laird are morphed into Playmates-style action figures for the first time by original TMNT toy sculptor Steve Varner. If these exclusive collectibles aren’t enough, Definitive Film also created a new book to accompany the documentary. As well as featuring original art from the beginnings of the television series, the book includes personal stories from the filmmakers and opinion pieces from the wider turtle community.
These collectibles will only be available through the Kickstarter campaign from Sept. 14 to Oct. 14, so join in while you can!
