Warner Bros. is switching it up with the cast of its new animated Scooby-Doo film. Will Forte (Lego Movie: The Second Part) will voice Shaggy, and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, Miss Bala) will come aboard as Velma.
Forte replaces fan-favorite Matthew Lillard, who portrayed Shaggy in the 2002 and 2004 live-action Scooby movies. Unfortunately, it seems that no one told Lillard he was getting the boot. The actor shared his surprise on Twitter on Saturday, with fans quick to show support.
Well this sucks.
What a crappy way to find out…. thanks Hollywood. You never sense to amaze me. https://t.co/QDdlMAqlrZ— matthew lillard (@MatthewLillard) March 2, 2019
Lillard and fans are right to be shook: The actor has voiced Scooby across platforms — from video games to TV — since 2004, totaling some 30 titles, one of which was released earlier this year.
Forte and Rodriguez join Tracy Morgan, who will voice Captain Caveman, and franchise veteran Frank Welker, who returns to voice Scooby himself.
Aside from the film predictably centering on Scooby and the gang, few plot details are known. We do know that Chris Columbus will be the creative producer, with Tony Cervone directing and Matt Lieberman writing the script.
The movie is set to release in May 2020.
