Last night, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held its annual Met Gala, the holy grail of fashion that celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute’s newest style exhibit. This year’s theme was camp: the spirit of extravagance, the outlandish, the over the top.
In everyday terms, camp is the art of being extra. This gave celebs ample opportunity to display the most in-your-face fashion looks they could muster. Some nailed it, and others fell short.
Let’s take a look at how some of our favorite people did.

Billy Porter
Friends: “Just wear something casual.”

Lily Collins
The star of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and the new Tolkien film is looking glam and gorgeous.
Darren Criss
… Came to slay, and not just Gianni Versace.
Dakota Johnson
This is everything. Almost going the Heavenly Bodies route but the bright pink and cartoony heart make it campy.

Janelle Monae
Crisp, modern, and artistic.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
Channeling the ‘80s and making us want to go play Tetris RN.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
Good morning to everyone except Nick Jonas’ stach. The newlyweds are dedicated to the theme but look more like thirst monster generals than the effortlessly cool Sophie and Joe.
Emma Roberts
A springy queen in dreamy, fluffy goodness.

Billie Lourd
This looks more like last year’s Heavenly Bodies theme TBH. She would’ve been better off channeling her Chanel No. 3 character from Scream Queens.

Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys
Yes. The green, the velvet, the sparkles, the hood, the train. All yes.
Hailee Steinfeld
Nailed it with this tongue-in-cheek message.
Camila Mendes and Charles Melton
We’re all about Cami, but she could’ve kicked the Big Bird-chic look up a notch. Go big or go home. Maybe if she had bigger hair it would complete the look. Charles looks sparkle-licious and fab in that suit though.
Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart
Cole looks like Willy Wonka awesomeness. Lili’s romper has too much fabric and not enough FASHUN. The Riverdale men really showed up.

Madelaine Petsch
Yasss, finally a Riverdale River Vixen who knows how to bring it.

Lupita Nyong’O
We’re loving Lupita’s original look and tons of detail. Nothing boring here!
Tessa Thompson
We’re confused — but in a good way — by this dominatrix Valkyrie-esque lewk.

Jared Leto
Yes, he is holding a replica of his own head.
Katie Holmes
Maleficent, dat chu?
Sarah Paulson
The champagne purse is cute but c’mon, this is the MET GALA. Step it up. We expect better from our Supreme.
Kacey Musgraves
A+ for this Moschino Barbie doll.
Rami Malek
Freddie Mercury rubbed off on this shimmering glass of water.
Katy Perry
There’s a difference between high fashion and a straight-up Halloween costume and this is the latter. She also changed into a hamburger later in the night.
Florence Welch
There’s a new mother of dragons in town.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
We’re not mad, just disappointed. Could. Have. Done. Better.

Pedro Pascal
This is fine. But just fine. We’re bored.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter
Pedro Pascal, take note. This is how to camp it up.
Ryan Murphy
The American Horror Story creator pays tribute to Liberace in a 100-pound, pearl-encrusted cape.

Rachel Brosnahan
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel isn’t afraid of color, and it pays off.

Lady Gaga
The queen of camp had not one, not two, but FOUR looks that she revealed one by one as she stripped off layers on the pink carpet.
