beyonce

In case you missed it and have been living under a rock (Pride Rock, that is), the one and only Beyoncé will take on the iconic role of lioness Nala in the new live-action version of The Lion King.

With its original soundtrack dropping tomorrow ahead of the film’s premiere, we’re excited to hear the updated songs, especially Queen Bey’s take on the hits. Not only that, but Disney also announced a second themed album that is inspired by the nature doc-worthy flick. This additional album will be curated and produced by Mrs. Knowles-Carter and is titled The Lion King: The Gift. What a gift that Bey has granted us!

The compilation will feature several global recording artists on tracks that are “steeped in the sounds of Africa.” To accompany the Instagram announcement, a brand-new, original Beyoncé track dropped last tonight. The single, titled “Spirit,” is available to download and stream now, with the remainder of The Gift tracks dropping on July 19.

This tune, oh wow, it is GOOD. I mean, it’s Queen Bey, so naturally, it had to be good. This new gospel-inspired track is five minutes long and delivers on every level. It has so many vocal runs, peak Beyoncé styling, and fits right in with the vibe of the Pride Lands. What more could you want?

“This is sonic cinema,” Beyoncé said in a statement. “This is a new experience of storytelling. I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film. It is a mixture of genres and a collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced by everything — from R&B, pop, hip-hop, and Afro Beat.”

“I wanted to put everyone on their own journey to link the storyline,” she continues. “Each song was written to reflect the film’s storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery while listening to a new contemporary interpretation. It was important that the music was not only performed by the most interesting and talented artists but also produced by the best African producers. Authenticity and heart were important to me.”

Give the track a listen below.

OK, I’m ready to take on the day — and the world — now.
