Throughout the day yesterday, social media lit up with the news that Netflix is set to carry all 21 Studio Ghibli films, with a rollout of titles starting next month. The official Netflix Facebook account even shared a video version of the announcement, which got millions of views and countless reacts, comments, and shares.
The only problem? While Netflix acquired the streaming rights for these movies in most global markets, it does not have the rights for these films in the U.S., Canada, or Japan. To be fair, the Studio Ghibli films will be coming to the U.S., but via HBO Max, which launches in April.
After getting their hopes up, many American fans were upset to learn that they won’t be able to watch My Neighbor Totoro with the rest of the world next month.
To ease the pain for those of us stuck in the Ghibli-less North America, here are a few top-notch memes about the whole thing!
