The CW keeps upping its superhero game—and this time, Batwoman is on the scene.
Following Batwoman’s live-action screen debut during The CW’s annual DC crossover event between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow later this year, a script is currently in development for a 2019 series focused on the Gotham City’s hero, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Batwoman focuses on Kate Kane, according to the show’s official logline, “who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet: in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Batwoman, the first openly gay title DC superhero, would become the first LGBT+ lead character of a live-action superhero show should Batwoman make it to series, following The CW’s track record of inclusion and diversity on air.
Greg Berlanti adds to his roster of 14 scripted series in production across six networks, including many of our DC favorites on The CW, with this new series alongside Caroline Dries, the showrunner of The Vampire Diaries, who will pen the script and serve as executive producer of the new series. Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter and former DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns also will executive produce the new drama.
During the network’s DC crossover event, Batwoman will make her television debut as she joins forces with our other favorite heroes, CW President Mark Pedowitz previously revealed at the network upfronts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If Batwoman is brought to series, the new drama would join the ranks of DC shows on The CW such as Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning.
