Mattel is not holding back at this year’s Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC)! The company has showcased a range of exclusives, including items from WWE, Monster High, and Jurassic Park.
Some of the highlights include an action figure of Muhammad Ali, one of the most famous boxers in history. The set includes two figures: Ali as a boxer and as a WWE referee from the very first WrestleMania. With more than 30 points of articulation and multiple heads and hands, these figures perfectly immortalize the storied athlete.
Mattel has unveiled a new Draculaura doll from Monster High making her Freak Du Chic debut. This acroBAT glides through the air with harlequin-printed bat wings and striped tail ruffles. The Pop Insider had a chance to speak with Chris Down, the Chief Design Officer at Mattel, who revealed a neat feature about the doll.
“The cool thing about [the Draculaura doll] is she can be posed upside down and right side up,” says Down. “The package itself is really cool too, because it could be displayed upside down and right side up.”
Mattel is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jurassic Park with a recreation of the intense moment when Dr. Ian Malcolm finds himself in the back of a Jeep Wrangler pursued by a hungry T. Rex. Mattel is also breaking the fourth wall with a Steven Spielberg action figure that comes with a camera, personalized director’s chair, and a dilophosaurus all in a box shaped like a director’s clapper.
“It’s certainly the first time that we’ve done an action figure of Steven Spielberg, and I believe that it’s the first time that we’ve actually done an action figure of a director,” says Down.
