Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swung into theaters and straight to the top of the box office this weekend.
In its first three days, the innovative, multi-spider-people animated film grossed $35.4 million. This pales in comparison to 2018 blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, or Incredibles 2, but it did earn the spot of best start for an animated movie in the month of December. (It dethroned 2016’s Sing, that cartoon about performing animals.)
The movie also came in ahead of Warner Bros.’ The Mule and Universal’s Mortal Engines, which also opened this weekend.
In addition to box office success, Spider-Verse’s critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The movie has maintained a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a Golden Globe nomination for best animated picture.
Sony already announced plans for a sequel and spinoffs set in the movie’s multiverse, and we can’t wait.
