Writer and director James Gunn was fired by Disney earlier this year after offensive tweets resurfaced on Twitter—right when he was about to lead Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Disney hasn’t announced anyone new to take his place since then, but SlashFilm’s Peter Sciretta tweeted earlier this week that two people who read Gunn’s Guardians 3 script said it made them cry, and many fans responded that they hope Marvel uses Gunn’s script.
James Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn (who plays Kraglin and does mo-cap work for Rocket), told Tulsa World in September that Disney and Marvel “have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote” but no one else has confirmed that.
Filming was originally slated to begin this upcoming February but now may not begin until 2021, so there’s a few years for Disney and Marvel to get their ish together.
