If Aquaman was DC’s first step away from darker movies, it seems Shazam! will be a full 180-degree spin. The movie’s first trailer gave fans a look at the overall premise of Shazam!—foster kid Billy Batson gets the power to become a full-fledged, adult superhero (played by Zachary Levi).
While that trailer included some jokes, the newest trailer, which Warner Bros. released yesterday, fully leans into the comedic aspects of the film.
It goes so far as to adapt the Joker’s famous “Why so serious?” line to the tagline, “He’s not so serious.” The trailer starts with some more serious footage of Batson transforming into Shazam, flying though the city, and facing Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).
Then, it cuts to a convenience store, where Batson, as Shazam, tells the bored teenage clerk, “I’d like to buy some of your finest beer please.”
The 53-second spot ends with Batson and his foster brother Freddy in a real estate office, trying to explain that they are looking for a “lair,” presumably to become Shazam/Batson’s superhero hideout. The lines continue to highlight the main theme of the trailer: This movie is a comedy.
