It’s looking like this year’s Oscars won’t have a traditional host, but the Academy may have a “super” surprise up its sleeve.
According to an exclusive Hollywood Reporter report, the show’s producers are attempting to line up as many big-name MCU actors as possible to appear during the telecast. Apparently, some Avengers were specifically asked not to present at the Golden Globes to ensure their Oscars appearance will be more meaningful.
This move would make sense on a few levels—especially considering the Oscars are broadcast on ABC, a Disney-owned network. There is also some precedent, as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) appeared on the Oscars stage together in 2013, following the success of Avengers.
The show also takes place Feb. 24, less than two months before Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, so it would serve as a nice promotion for the movie.
We’ll have to wait and see if the producers pull it off (the Avengers team has expanded quite a bit from its 2012 origins), but it would certainly add some star-power to this year’s ceremony.
