The highly anticipated Marvel flick, Avengers: Endgame, opened this weekend to massive fan excitement and made history with its $1.2 billion global debut.
The epic blockbuster shattered box office records as it became the first film to surpass $1 billion in its opening weekend. To add to that impressive feat, the film reached its record-breaking position in only five days, which is twice as fast as it took last year’s Avengers: Infinity War to reach the same milestone.
“Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn, said in a statement. “Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”
The film debuted with a $300 million box office gross across the U.S., beginning with a record-shattering $60 million during Thursday evening preview showings. The film not only set records in domestic theaters, but also globally.
“We poured our heart and soul into Avengers: Endgame, hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world,” directors Anthony and Joe Russo said in a statement. “Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, everyone at Disney and Marvel, and the incredible, global community of fans – thank you.”
The film estimated a total debut of $859 million internationally, which included a record Chinese debut of $330.5 million.
This No. 1 debut marks the fastest film to reach a $1 billion sum at the box office with, rightfully, the biggest industry opening weekend flick across 44 global markets. Not only did the fans show up to see the movie in its opening days, but the film has already received several glowing reviews, including a 96% Certified Fresh ranking on Rotten Tomatoes and an A+ on CinemaScore.
