DC and Warner Bros. started developing a Blue Beetle movie about Jaime Reyes, according to a report from The Wrap.

This would be the first DC superhero movie with a Latino hero as the titular character. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Scarface, Miss Bala) was tapped to write the screenplay, and Zev Foreman will executive produce.

In the comics, Jaime Reyes is the third Blue Beetle, following Dan Garret and Ted Kord. Reyes is a Mexican-American teenager, and he first appeared in the Infinite Crisis comics in 2006. He discovers the Blue Beetle scarab on his way home from school and takes it home, where it comes alive and grafts itself to his spine.

The scarab provides Reyes with a suit of extraterrestrial armor that enhances his speed and strength.

While there have been some Latino characters in DC movies, including El Diablo in Suicide Squad and Renee Montoya in the upcoming Birds of Prey, this will be the first standalone superhero title starring a Latino actor.
