Few moments of Avengers: Infinity War got fans more excited than Captain America (looking decidedly not like Captain America) emerged from the shadows to fight alongside Scarlet Witch and Vision in Edinburgh.
However, that action-packed, serious scene with the heroes fighting the children of Thanos could have been very different. According the the new book Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War—The Art of the Movie, there was a version of the scene set during a winter festival. Storyboard artist Bryan Andrews remembers, “large crowds, snow, and Cap and the gang were already on-site trying to find Vision and Wanda in a crowd of Santas.”
The Russo brothers ultimately moved away from this direction, which seems to have been the right call. A crowd of Santas could have distracted from Cap’s important entrance.
The book reveals some other “almosts” the studio considered for Cap in the third Avengers film. They included the U.S. Agent outfit or a more rugged look of Army fatigues.
Marvel Studios’ head of development Ryan Meinerding says Cap’s Infinity War costume took a lot of time and consideration:
“I think Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios President] was looking for ways of Cap still feeling iconic. He didn’t want him stepping away from the super hero stuff for the whole movie. And if you put him in fatigues at the beginning of the movie, there’s not really a reason for him to get out of them or change costumes at any point in the rest of the film. So we were searching for a while…”
Based on character art released from Avengers 4, Cap will likely return to the classic stars and stripes for Avengers 4, which hits theaters next year.
