Michael Myers only comes around once a year, and instead of running away screaming, audiences welcomed him with open arms this weekend. Universal’s Halloween earned an estimated $77.5 million in North America this opening weekend—better than the previous 10 Halloween movies.
Halloween also lands as the second biggest debut for a horror film ever, second to last year’s It, which had a $123 million opening.
Jamie Lee Curtis, who stars as Laurie Strode, tweeted about the win. Halloween also snatched the title for the best horror opening with a female lead, in addition to being Curtis’ biggest opening to date.
