Mary Poppins returned to Cherry Tree Lane, and it seems she won’t be leaving in such a hurry.
According to The Sun, the director of Mary Poppins Returns, Rob Marshall, is reportedly developing a sequel to the practically perfect film starring Emily Blunt as the magical nanny.
Speaking at the American Airlines, BBC America, and Jaguar Land Rover BAFTA Tea Party earlier this week, Marshall confirmed that the production team is moving forward with plans for another subsequent Disney film, further delving into the world of author P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins. Marshall did point out that Travers’ series includes eight books, so there is no shortage of material to pull from for a script.
“It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine,” Marshall told the British newspaper. “That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know…”
Given that the film was adapted from the collection of Travers’ work, there would be plenty of stories ripe to tell in another film.
Marshall continued, “Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”
Blunt previously expressed interest in another film as the cheerful nanny, and producer John DeLuca praised Blunt’s Golden Globe-nominated performance and believes a Mary Poppins 3 could happen, especially due to the success of the sequel.
“Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it,” DeLuca told the newspaper. “And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”
