Matt Smith, fresh off his Emmy-nominated performance as Prince Philip in The Crown, is in final talks to star alongside Jared Leto in Morbius, a Marvel spinoff based on the infamous Spider-Man villain.
While it is not yet known who Smith will portray, we do know that he will have a major role in the film. Daniel Espinosa, who directed Safe House, is set to direct. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, co-creators of Netflix’ Lost in Space, penned the script and Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach plan to produce alongside Lucas Foster.
Morbius was created in 1972 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane for The Amazing Spider-Man #101. The villain was depicted as a scientist who tried to cure himself of a blood disease, only to face catastrophic results. Not long after, he developed vampiric traits and wound up facing off against Spider-Man.
Smith can be seen this March in the biopic Mapplethorpe, which premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
