Netflix introduced a collection of new original series and films featuring Asian stories and storytellers at its first content showcase in Asia. The projects include anime series Pacific Rim, anime feature Altered Carbon, manga-based series Cagaster of an Insect Cage, animated Japanese series Yasuke, and an anime series based on a Phillippine graphic novel, Trese.
Thai language originals include The Stranded, a series about mysterious events plaguing high school students after surviving a tsunami on a remote island, and Shimmers, a drama series about teenagers who are haunted by the ghosts of their pasts at an isolated school in Northern Thailand.
Chinese language originals include Triad Princess, a Taiwanese original series about a young woman who takes a job as an undercover bodyguard for a famous actress against her father’s wishes.
“The beauty of Netflix is that we can take never-seen-before stories from South Korea, Thailand, Japan, India, Taiwan, or elsewhere, and easily connect them to people all over Asia and the world,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix.
Netflix’s previous Asian projects include crime thriller Sacred Games (in India), anime series Devilman Crybaby (in Japan), and variety comedy Busted! (in Korea) from this year.
