Funko Pop! figures have taken the collecting world by storm, and Funko Fusion is doing the same for the gaming community! At New York Comic Con (NYCC), two of the many minds behind the game spoke about the creation process and revealed upcoming expansions that all fandoms will absolutely adore.Â
Funko (Booth No. 1000), in partnership with 10:10 Games, first released Funko Fusion on Sept. 13. Fans can play through iconic worlds and mashup characters inspired by their favorite TV shows, movies, video games, and more. Funko Fusion features more than 60 playable characters from more than 20 fandoms, including Jurassic World, Back to the Future, JAWS, The Thing, Hot Fuzz, and more.
Arthur Parsons, co-founder of 10:10 Games and head of publishing, and Jason Bischoff, VP of licensing and business development, shared some behind-the-scenes insights with The Pop Insider before hitting the panel. The duo spoke about the game’s creation process, different IP franchises, and the impact fans had on the game.
Why did you choose Funko Fusion to become 10:10 Games’ first video game?
When we started on this journey, we were like, ‘What do we do for game one?’ There hasn’t been a Funko video game … so we have to think about how do the characters move, how do they talk, how do they run, jump, interact, die, shoot. We had to think all that through and, as we’re thinking that through, we’re also like, ‘How do we express Funko for the first time?’
We looked at it as Funko fans and [thought] ‘Look at a shelf, just look at a collector’s shelf or the room they keep their Pops! in,’ and that’s what game one should be. We always think that Funko Pops! express who you are, [so] the game is that sort of expression of fandom. That’s what it’s about — it’s about fandom, and also, it’s just a fun video game.
How much impact did fans have on the video game?
I always find that, in previous games I’ve worked on, you have to embrace the thoughts and inputs of everyone, and that includes your players. They’re the people that are going to sell out their hard-earned dollars to buy your game, so the least you can do is listen to them and hear them out. You can’t do all those things [fan suggestions], but what you can do is hear the noise and then filter out to find the common themes. We’ve already been reacting to what some players have responded to [such as] they found the game a little too hard when we first launched it. So, we’ve done a pass and took the stress out of the game to make sure people are enjoying it for what it is. It’s helpful for us to know what people want.
What’s your favorite thing about Funko Fusion?
I would just say it’s kind of plain, but just honestly, the creative process. It’s been three years of the journey working with Arthur…the incredible team over at 10:10, and the whole project literally started with a two-day summit. We rented an Airbnb (Jon Burton, a couple folks from Funko, and myself), and we just sketched out what we thought this thing was going to be. At the end of three years, it was basically the fulfillment of what we had put on just a couple pieces of paper.
How did you choose which characters to add in the game?
We had a very clear vision that we wanted to do something that was unexpected and mismatched across not only genre but ranging in age bracket as well. We talked to three different groups specifically, and ultimately we landed on NBCUniversal because we felt like we had a good flexibility there, and we know the team also. They knew that there would be a high level of trust in mixing things like Jurassic World and Five Nights at Freddy’s. From NBCUniversal, we have 21 properties integrated in the game today and about a half dozen others that are not in this universe.
During the Funko Fusion x NYCC Panel, Parsons and Bischoff revealed new expansions for the game, including free DLC packs like the Jurassic World Bonus Pack, Sun Wukong, and Back to the Future Outfit Packs. Players can also experience online co-op gameplay for Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in the near future.Â
If you make happy little accidents, you’ll adore the Bob Ross Pack. Everyone’s favorite artist features four outfit variations and a brand-new weapon known as the Brush Beater Gun (if you’ve seen a Bob Ross video, you know exactly what this refers to). Like Back to the Future, the Bob Ross Pack is available today, starting at $4.99.
All Invincible fans will want to play Funko Fusion with this upcoming expansion pack. After a surprise guest appearance from Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of Invincible, the panelists revealed the Invincible Pack DLC, which will be available on Nov. 15.Â
To end the panel, the duo announced The Office Pack DLC will come later this year, and fans can also expect Funko Fusion Wave 3 in 2025.
Explore your fandom and embrace new ones with Funko Fusion, now available on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game will join PS4 on Nov. 15 and the Nintendo Switch this December.
