Goodbye year of ultraviolet, because things are about to get tropical with the hot new “It” color of 2019.

Pantone, the self-appointed authority on color, chooses the next big color trend for the year ahead. For 2019, they’ve decided to head under the sea, taking inspiration from the sea floor and coral reefs, and have chosen “Living Coral” the new color of the year for 2019.

“Just as coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life, vibrant yet mellow, Pantone 16-1546, Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment,” Pantone announced on Wednesday.

Every year, Pantone chooses the year’s new hot color based on socioeconomic conditions, fashion trends, new technologies, and new trends in lifestyle, art, music, travel, and social media.

In today’s world, with technology and social media central to our daily lives, Pantone decided to turn to nature and its colors for the new color. The color was chosen because we could use more optimism and “joyful pursuits” in our lives.

“Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, says in a statement. “With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

According to Pantone, the engaging nature of the color Living Coral “welcomes” and “encourages” lightheartedness, with an authenticity that promotes connection and intimacy.

“In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind,” the news release read. “Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Pantone Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”

So, prepare to decorate your home, your wardrobe, and your life with various coral hues.
