joker

Joker has just become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, beating previous champ Deadpool 2. Deadpool himself Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to offer his congrats.

The tweet read, “R-Rated box office congratulatory posts aren’t like the ones you’re used to” and featured a photo of Joker’s theatrical poster with — what can only be presumed to be Reynolds’ handy photoshop work — the words “You Mother F*cker” written above Joaquin Phoenix’s head, and a list of the top-eight-grossing R-rated films below.

Other R-rated high-earners include 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded at $738.6 million, 2017’s It at $697 million, and 2004’s The Passion of the Christ at $622.3 million.

The Warner Bros. dark character study about the rise of Gotham City’s most tragic comic has reeled in a worldwide box office total of $788.1 million. With a production cost of $62.5 million, it’s one of the most-profitable comic-book adaptations in history.
