Warner Bros.’ second Suicide Squad movie will release in theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
The studio is in talks with filmmaker James Gunn to direct the continuation of the DC Comics film. Warner Bros. tapped Gunn in October to write the script.
There’s no word on whether the original cast will reprise their villainous roles, as Suicide Squad 2 is reported to be kind of a sequel but also kind of a reboot. No one really knows! Gunn reportedly plans to mix old and new characters and actors and take a completely different direction for whatever kind of movie it is, according to CBR.com.
Gunn is known for writing and directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, but he was fired by Disney after his older, controversial Tweets resurfaced online.
Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce Suicide Squad 2, while Justice League director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder will executive produce the movie, according to Comicbook.
Gavin O’Connor was originally in line to direct the second Suicide Squad installment. However, he is currently directing Brad Ingelsby’s Torrance, which stars Ben Affleck.
In other villainous DC news, Margot Robbie is set to return as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, whose production begins this month. Meanwhile, Jared Leto is busy gearing up for his lead role in Sony Pictures’ Morbius The Living Vampire, premiering in July 2020, according to Den of Geek.
