COVID-19 has led to the closure of nearly every major con this spring, but nerds are resilient.
Many companies have announced plans for virtual conventions and the latest announcement is probably the biggest one yet: Collider, Legion M, Kaleidoko, and Experience Level Entertainment (XLEVELENT) partnered to bring fans the Virtual Fan Expo (VFE) on May 2-3.
“Above all, we’re enabling a deep, inclusive and meaningful sense of community for pop culture fans hungry for fun and engaging social opportunities currently stolen by the global pandemic,” says Bernie Bregman, director of business development and talent acquisitions at XLEVELENT in a press release. VFE will recreate the con experience in a unique way, bringing the exhibitor floor online through the virtual marketplace Auxxit. More than 100 exhibitors and vendors are expected to be on the con “floor” where they will be able to interact with attendees.
The event will also feature panels, Q&As, interactive gaming rooms, online happy hours, and a cosplay “ball.” Celebrity appearances include Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Rampage) and the Maltin on Movies podcast hosts Leonard and Jessie Maltin.
