As Doc Brown put it, “If you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” To keep that spirit alive, TOMY has created a Kickstarter campaign for a limited-edition die-cast model of the original time machine from Back to the Future, officially licensed by Universal Studios.
This time machine model is replicated in 1:10 scale and measures in at 17 inches long. Built for an interactive experience, the car has functional interior and exterior lights and real smoke emits from the rear fins using an oil-based liquid. Furthermore, the car comes with almost all functionalities intact, including opening side doors, free-rolling wheels, a detailed interior, and LED lights. It is compatible with existing 7-inch Marty McFly and Doc Brown figures (sold separately). The only thing missing is actual time travel, but we can’t blame TOMY for that.
TOMY product designers worked closely with NBC Universal and referenced photos from the Peterson Museum during the design proces, making sure the replica was as close to the original as possible. This is TOMY’s second crowdfunding project, following the success of its Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise replica, which raised $1,786,250.
Fans can back the project here for a minimum of $299, which will also get them home a 3-inch figure of Einstein the dog. The project met its funding goal of $250,000 long before its Aug. 10 deadline, meaning that shipping is targeted to start in October 2024.
