The studio first approached McKay—known for directing movies such as Anchorman, Step Brothers, The Big Short, and Vice—about taking over Ant-Man following Edgar Wright’s departure. McKay refused, but did work as a writer on the film.
More recently, he revealed on the podcast Happy Sad Confused that Marvel also approached him about both Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Despite refusing to join so far, McKay was complimentary of the studio. “We were kicking around the idea of the Inhumans at one point. We’re always kind of talking. I think [Kevin] Feige is just the greatest and what they’re doing is amazing,” he said.
So what would bring McKay into the Marvel fold? He’s expressed interest in adapting Silver Surfer for the big screen. He also slipped that Marvel may be working on a Nova project.
“When I was in the fourth or fifth grade I got into Nova of all people, and I think they’re kicking around a Nova idea now too,” he said.
James Gunn, the former Guardians director who helmed the cosmic aspects of the MCU, previously revealed he wasn’t a Nova fan. Now that he’s been fired from the series, though, the door may be open.
