godzilla king of the monsters

Godzilla’s large and looming presence helped make the anticipated film king of the box office during its opening weekend. The star-studded Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters sequel raked in $49 million during its theatrical debut in more than 4,000 locations, according to Variety.

The third film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise saw its box office debut way down from its two predecessors — Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017) — which made $93 million and $61 million, respectively, during opening weekend.

While domestic theaters didn’t see as an impressive debut, the king of the monsters soared overseas with a $179 million global opening weekend.

In domestic theaters, the film earned $8.1 million from Imax screenings and did well among its core demographic of fans.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, before you go sprinting from theaters at the first sight of the production credits, stay put in your seat a little while longer to see the post-credits scene dive deeper into what could happen next for the franchise. Without spoiling much, this ending scene takes viewers back to the Isla de Mara and perhaps teases the conflict in the next big picture, Godzilla vs. Kong.
