Elba. Idris Elba. It certainly has a ring to it, doesn’t it?
The identity of the newest James Bond is still an enigma wrapped in a mystery, like the secret agent himself, but new reports reveal that actor Idris Elba is a major contender for the role.
The rumors started swirling in 2014 when the Sony-email-hack-scandal-royale revealed that Elba was in talks for the roll. In response, Elba has denied that he will play 007 again and again, even telling Variety that he’d love to see a woman play Bond, saying, ““Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have—do something different with it, why not?”
It’s important to note that we’ve never seen a black James Bond, and that would be a major step in the right direction as well.
The Independent and The Daily Star report that Bond director Antoine Fuqua said that placing a non-white actor in the role “will happen eventually” and that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said “it is time.”
It’s time indeed. SEVEN different actors have played the part, including Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, to name a few, and all of them have been white. We are ready for a change and we volunteer Elba as tribute.
