Season three of Netflix’s hit original The Crown may have just dropped last weekend, but the streaming giant is already in casting talks for its next queen.
Olivia Coleman, who’s currently playing the monarch, is on board for season four, too. But as fans of the series know, casting is switched up every few seasons to be age-appropriate. Netflix reportedly has its eyes on Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) to play Queen Elizabeth II in the series’ seasons five and six.
The company hasn’t confirmed reports that Staunton could be coming aboard, but Deadline reports that she is in talks with Left Bank Pictures regarding the role. But before we go getting ourselves too excited, let’s remember that there hasn’t even officially been a green light for seasons five and six — yet.
“We are currently filming season four of The Crown but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.
Receipts or no, I’m cautiously optimistic over here. After all, Professor Umbridge always did have delusions of grandeur; who better to play a queen?!
