It’s been nearly two months since Disney removed James Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and it has yet to find a replacement director for the now-postponed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ghostbusters director Paul Feig explained why he wouldn’t consider taking on the role from Gunn, who was fired after the publication of old tweets in which he joked about pedophelia and rape.
“I would never take anything away from another filmmaker,” Feig said. “You can think whatever, moralize about what James wrote. I don’t make those kind of jokes, I don’t like those kind of jokes. But still, that’s James’ franchise.”
Feig isn’t alone in identifying the franchise as Gunn’s. Many of the film’s actors, especially Dave Batista, have been vocal in denouncing Disney’s decision.
Although Feig isn’t interested in taking over Star Lord, Groot, Rocket, and the rest of the Guardians family, would he consider directing another superhero movie? He did express some interest, if the character were right, but admits he “doesn’t love” superheroes.
“My problem is that I can never figure out the stakes,” he said. “Because if a guy gets punched through a building and the building falls on him and he can get up and shake his head, then I don’t know what I’m rooting for with you.”
