When we last saw Cassian Andor, he was staring down a nuclear sunset in the embrace of Jyn Erso as the first Death Star wiped-out the city of Jedah in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While we know that the dashing spy sacrificed himself so that the Rebellion could live on, his story is far from over.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced this week that the character will return in a new, live-action series that Lucasfilm is currently developing for the forthcoming direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+.
Described as “a spy thriller,” the new series will “explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”
Actor Diego Luna will return to the role for the prequel, commenting with the following: “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
No word yet on a release date or other creative involvements.
In the meantime, production continues on The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars series set to debut on Disney+ next year.
