Venom has been in theaters for some time here in the U.S., but the film’s recent release in China skyrocketed its box office numbers. Since debuting overseas on Nov. 11, the antihero film is now the newest flick to rank in the Top 100 Highest Grossing Films list. The other most recent addition is Incredibles 2, which is now ranked at No. 15.
While Venom made $210 million domestically, it overtook Justice League last week after earning a whopping $34.7 million on its opening day in China alone. This feat makes Ruben Fleischer’s film the second-biggest opening day earner of a superhero movie in the country’s box office history.
After a full week, Venom surpassed the original Star Wars, which grossed $775.4 million worldwide, and Guardians of the Galaxy, which stands strong at $773.3 million. Next on the list are Deadpool and Spider-Man 2, which currently stand at $783.1 million and $783.8 million, respectively.
Venom may be a financial success, but audience and critic reviews were mixed after its release. And although a second installment doesn’t have a green light yet, it’s safe to assume that we’ll see Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom somewhere down the line.
