Yesterday, 20th Century Fox released the final trailer for Dark Phoenix, which is set to wrap up 20 years of X-Men movies.
The first trailer dropped a pretty big bombshell: Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) kills Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). This new trailer blends some scenes we’ve already seen with new footage to give a more linear look at Jean’s downward spiral, starting with the freak space accident that gives Jean dark powers and leads to her transformation into the Dark Phoenix.
The trailer also reveals that the “Phoenix” moniker comes from Jean’s fellow young mutants at the Academy.
As the studio describes it, “The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. … The family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet: one of their own.”
Things do indeed look rough by the end of this trailer, and it’s clear that things aren’t going to end with rainbows and sunshine for the X-Men family. “When I lose control, bad things happen,” Jean says. “But it feels good.”
Catch the literal firestorm in the trailer below, and see Dark Phoenix in theaters on June 7.
