Netflix is killing it with the original content lately, as is Ryan Murphy with premium shows, including American Horror Story and American Crime Story. The streaming service and the director/producer are teaming up for a Netflix original movie called The Prom, adapted from the Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name.
If the star-studded cast is any indication, it’s going to be a good movie. Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Ariana Grande, Keegan-Michael Key, James Corden, Awkwafina, and Andrew Rannels will star in the film, which tells the story of a lesbian student who wants to bring her girlfriend to the school dance in a conservative, middle-America town. The couple is banned from attending, igniting a fight for justice.
The Broadway version has received six Tony nominations, including one for best musical, and will run until Aug. 11.
Murphy is also adapting the play The Boys in the Band for Netflix, starring the same actors who appeared on stage: Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, and Andrew Rannells.
