Horror fans at New York Comic Con (NYCC) got the first peek at some of the new films coming from Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster at this year’s Blumfest.
Hosted by Matthew Patrick (The Game Theorists, Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 & 2), the panel offered fans of all types of horror films something spectacularly horrifying to look forward to, with special themed giveaways throughout the show.
One of the first major announcements concerned the reason for Patrick’s appearance at the panel, as he’ll be teaming up with Blumhouse on a special film series based on various indie horror games and channels. The first film idea shared for the series was a teaser for a film based on the puzzle-and-horror game Amanda the Adventurer.
As for the elevator pitch for why it was picked as the first choice, Patrick shares: “Amanda is basically Dora the Explorer meets The Ring. She’s this tragic but also terrifying character, and the film’s also asking the question of ‘Can you trust the media that we’re putting in front of our kids?'”
Patrick then shifted the focus to Jason Blum’s studio’s inability to have a “normal year,” as this year they released two box-office hits, Backrooms and Obsession. It appears that next year will be yet another stacked year for horror films, as they revealed nine titles: River, The Revenge of La Llorona, The Exorcist: Martyrs, Anything but Ghosts, Molepeople, Sleepover, Seasons, and the revivals of Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project.
Fans got sneak peeks of the trailers for River and The Exorcist: Martyrs, and saw Patrick and Blum chatting with James Wan, Rob Savage, Mike Flanagan, Curry Barker, Cooper Tomlinson, Jessica Rothe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Lakeith Stanfield about their respective films in the lineup.
Patrick and Blum also spoke with content creator and horror queen Heidi Wong, who recommended the psychological thriller Braid (2018) to the audience and announced her first writing-and-directing project with Blumhouse, inspired by Eastern mythologies and folklore.
The last major announcement of the night was that Blumhouse will produce a film adaptation of the comic series Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV, with Craig Zobel as director, and that filming is set to begin sometime next year.
With all these upcoming films, horror fans are sure to find some new faves to fear and obsess over. For more information on all things Blumhouse, visit blumhouse.com.
