Captain Marvel Rocks!

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is fully embracing its ’90s lineage.

The iconic Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles sprang back to life this week, re-dressed in its ’90s colors for a Captain Marvel pop-up event. Presented by KROQ, Captain Marvel Rocks! — a cast Q&A featuring Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Lashana Lynch (Maria Rambeau), and Ben Mendelsohn — was broadcast exclusively on Twitter. It was hosted by former MTV VJ “Downtown” Julie Brown. Staying true to the era, the event also featured performances by Bush and L7.

While we still don’t have a confirmed soundtrack for the film as of this writing, Elastica, Republica, and Hole have been featured heavily in marketing for Captain Marvel.

The Sunset Strip Tower Records location is an international icon — a mecca for music fans — that closed when the company liquidated in 2006. At one point, it was painted over to make it more attractive to potential tenants, but was largely restored when Gibson Guitars moved in to create a west coast outpost. Though Gibson recently moved out, the spirit of Tower Records lives on, and the building has served as a nostalgic location for pop-up events for Guns N’ Roses, among others. It was also the premiere location for the 2015 documentary All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records.
