If you were wishing for another magic carpet ride, the genies at Disney just made it come true. A sequel to last year’s live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin will be getting a follow-up in the land of Agrabah, according to Variety.
Disney has been searching for the right take for the last six months and has finally landed on writers John Gatins’ (Flight) and Andrea Berloff’s (The Kitchen) pitch to take the franchise to unbelievable heights. The film is now in early development and will release in theatres, not as an exclusive to Disney+.
Producers of Aladdin’s followup hope to welcome back Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott to reprise their roles, but no offers will be made until a script is ready, according to Variety.
While there were two straight-to-video sequels for 1992’s animated original Aladdin, this live-action sequel will take the story in a new and original direction — although I’m sure we’ll see The Return of Jafar either way.
