Everyone knows Dora the Explorer as the hit Nick Jr. character from the 2000s.
The sweet, little Latina explorer grew up teaching young fans Spanish while embarking on wild adventures with her friends Boots, Map, and Backpack.
However, in the initial trailer for her first live-action film, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, the adventure just got a lot wilder.
Dora (Isabela Moner) is all grown up and taking on the most dangerous adventure of her life: high school.
The heroine left the jungle for a simpler life of normal, teenage drama, but she must embark on a rescue mission with Boots, her cousin Diego (Jeff Wahlberg), a mysterious explorer (Eugenio Derbez), and a group of teens to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Pena) and discover a lost city of gold.
If the storyline sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Ahem, The Road to El Dorado, anyone?

With a star-studded cast and adult storyline, this trailer triggers so many questions and emotions. Is Nickelodeon really marketing this movie to children? Does Nick intend for this to be a serious adaptation or satire? Did rough-and-tough actors Danny Trejo and Benicio del Toro really agree to voice an animated monkey and fox?
The answer to most of these questions is a very uncomfortable “yes,” especially since the trailer aired during the 2019 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards this past Saturday.
But, there is one ultimate question everyone’s asking: Where the heck are Boots’ little, red boots?

Dora and the Lost City of Gold, from Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures, premieres this summer.
