The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and your winter coat is rightfully where it belongs — buried in your closet. Finally, it’s summer. There’s no better time to shut out the outside world and head into the magical realms of Dungeons and Dragons.
All summer long, Wizards of the Coast will be celebrating Drizzt Do’Urden, the iconic D&D hero who’s been featured in more than 30 novels and has been saving the day since the ‘80s. The celebration kicked off with an animated short narrated by Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.
The short — called “Sleep Sound” — introduces new fantasy fans to the hero and his companions. Cumberbatch narrates the story of a young drow born into a cult of an evil Spider Queen. When given the chance to do what’s right, the drow escapes and discovers the harsh realities of the world.
The short is part of a longer video hosted by B. Dave Walters — “All Things Drizzt” — that provides an exclusive look at all of the Drizzt-related happenings this summer. That includes an interview with the developers of the Dark Alliance video game (out on June 22), new details about R.A. Salvatore’s Legend of Drizzt novel (out on Aug. 3), and a sneak peek at three new Magic: The Gathering cards from the upcoming Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set dropping on July 23.
Drizzt is a fan favorite of those who have been conquering the worlds of D&D for decades, as well as those who are new to the game’s magical offerings. He always does what’s right and fights for what he believes in. The legend of Drizzt has been featured in everything from novels to Funko Pops. Currently, a live-action D&D TV show is in the works with eOne, as well as a live-action D&D film. The movie doesn’t star Drizzt, but it will take place in his home of the Forgotten Realms and will feature actors Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Rege-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, and Justice Smith.
