Here’s a sentence we haven’t typed for a while: The first trailer for the newest Wizarding World movie dropped today. Yes, my muggle friends, the next Fantastic Beasts movie — The Secrets of Dumbledore — is actually coming out, and there is a 2.5-minute trailer to prove it.
If you’d forgotten that this movie was coming at all, we wouldn’t blame you for needing a remembrall: It’s been more than three years since the last Fantastic Beasts movie, The Crimes of Grindelwald, debuted in theaters to mixed reviews. In the years since, the third installment has faced a variety of delays, both due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the choice to recast the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Johnny Depp originated the role in the first and second Fantastic Beasts movies, but he has been replaced by Mads Mikkelsen for The Secrets of Dumbledore. According to a statement that Depp released via Instagram last year, Warner Bros. asked him to resign from the role after he lost his libel case against newspaper tabloid The Sun.
In the new trailer for The Secrets of Dumbledore, audiences get their first look at Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald, along with returning cast members Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Jude Law (Dumbledore), Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone), Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski), Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein), Callum Turner (Theseus Scamander), Jessica Williams (Lally Hicks), and Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein).
The trailer is packed with plenty of action, spells, magical creatures, and even a few shots of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. According to an official summary from Warner Bros., this movie will follow Dumbledore, Scamander, and the others in the fight against Grindelwald. They will embark on “a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers.”
The Secrets of Dumbledore is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 15, ahead of the July 15 release date it held at the time of Mikkelsen’s casting.
