weiss and benioff

Now that Game of Thrones is coming to an end, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to have some time on their hands. However, it sounds like they’ll be moving from the biggest show in history to one of the most successful film franchises of all time: Star Wars.

According to Deadline, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed today that the duo will direct the next installment in the Star Wars franchise, which is set to debut in 2022 (according to a multi-year release schedule Disney debuted last week).

Benioff and Weiss have been attached to the Star Wars universe since last January, but this is the most official announcement to date.

According to Iger, Disney is intentionally waiting three years between the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker — also known as the end of the Skywalker saga — and the next Star Wars movie. He says the team felt “it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next. … The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release.”

However, fans won’t have to wait the full three years for any new Star Wars content. The Mandalorian is set to debut on the Disney+ streaming service soon, as is a second Star Wars series, Iger says.

Iger wouldn’t give any additional details about the new films, which will go past George Lucas‘ original plans for the franchise.

So, will the minds behind the kingdom of Westeros do well in a galaxy far, far away? We’ll have to wait until 2022 to see.
