Today is the last day of CinemaCon, a convention for movie theater owners from around the world. Over the past few days, studios have previewed scenes from or trailers for tons of major upcoming movies.
We already told you about DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey sneak peeks, but here are some of the other movies previewed at the show, along with details attendees have shared. Spoilers ahead, obviously!
Avengers: Endgame
This is perhaps the most spoiler-y tidbit to come out of CinemaCon so far. Apparently, Disney screened an actual scene from the upcoming (already record-setting) fourth Avengers film. This is an especially big deal because the Russo brothers, who directed the movie, have confirmed that at least some of the promotional materials for Endgame are intentionally misleading or not part of the movie at all.
According to Deadline, this scene focuses on newcomer Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) interacting with the veteran Avengers. The scene features Danvers (Brie Larson), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Nebula (Karen Gillan), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth).
Apparently, Danvers has been caught up to speed on the events of Infinity War, announces to the room that she’s going to kill Thanos, and then turns to leave. The other Avengers stop her, noting that they usually work as a team and that this is their fight, too. Nebula may know where the Infinity Stones and Thanos are hiding out, and the team decides to go looking. The scene also includes a moment featured in the second Endgame trailer, when Thor summons his axe while staring down Danvers and proclaims, “I like this one.” Then, the scene cuts to the whole crew aboard Rocket’s spaceship.
Downton Abbey
Focus Features screened the first full trailer for this upcoming movie, which is based on the popular Downton Abbey TV series. According to Deadline, it starts with many familiar sights and sounds from the estate: kitchen bells, a clock-winding, a table being set, and the long drive up to the house. Apparently, the premise of the movie is that the king and queen are coming to visit Downton. Preparing for a royal visit is obviously a stressful time for everyone involved, and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) ends up calling on the retired Carson (Jim Carter) for help. The trailer also includes “a subplot about ‘leaving Downton’ and lots of dancing.”
Toy Story 4
Disney concluded its CinemaCon presentation with the first 17 minutes of its upcoming animated feature, Toy Story 4. Variety reports that the new footage shows Woody and his friends adjusting to life with their new owner, Bonnie, who is preparing for kindergarten orientation and ultimately has trouble making new friends at school. Woody (Tom Hanks) decides to help out, sneaking into Bonnie’s backpack to join her at school and raiding a trash can to give her craft supplies, which she uses to make a pal of her own: Forky (Tony Hale).
Apparently, Forky does not adjust well to his new role as a living toy and goes into a bit of a crisis. The clip ends with Bonnie and her family preparing to go on a road trip, bringing Forky along for the ride.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Comicbook.com provided a full description of the new Dark Phoenix footage Disney showed as part of its CinemaCon panel. This movie is expected to be the “final chapter” of the current X-Men franchise.
The clip reportedly shows Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) telling NASA that help is on the way. Nightcrawler and Jean use their powers to help the astronauts, but Jean gets left behind to take on the Phoenix Force. The team realizes Jean is starting to lose control and could kill them all, and a major fight ensues.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Disney also showed footage from this upcoming live-action movie, starring Angelina Jolie reprising her role as Maleficent. According to Comicbook.com, the footage started with Queen Ingrith (Michele Pfeiffer) recapping the first movie, then showed Prince Phillip inviting Maleficent and Aurora to the castle. They meet Ingrith, and a conflict begins as the queen tries to become a mother figure to Aurora, which makes Maleficent jealous.
It: Chapter 2
Attendees saw footage and a teaser for the second installment of this adaptation of Stephen King’s It. The sequel, as we already knew, focuses on the Losers Club returning to Derry, Maine, as adults when Pennywise the clown resurfaces. Deadline reports that the footage shows an older Beverly Marsh (Jessica Chastain) visiting her late father’s old apartment, where a spooky old lady now resides. The woman retrieves an old love letter to Bev (presumably the one Ben wrote her), tells her about her father joining the circus, and says, “No one who ever dies ever really dies.” Bev grows suspicious, but it’s too late: The old lady morphs into something monstrous. The teaser reportedly shows the adult Losers Club reunited and walking through town, balloons everywhere under a bridge, and a shot of Pennywise saying hello.
Aladdin
Disney’s next live-action adaptation lands in theaters next month, and CinemaCon attendees got to see new footage from the movie. According to Comicbook.com, the scene showed Aladdin in the Cave of Wonders, attempting to retrieve the magic lamp. Abu catches a falling gem, causing the entire cave to collapse. The scene also included the Genie (Will Smith) and the musical number “Friend Like Me” from the movie’s original version.
The Lion King
This live-action (really, fancier animation) remake is set to hit theaters this summer. According to Deadline, Disney showed footage of a scene featuring young Simba and his father, Mufasa. Simba hops on his sleeping parents, then his father takes him to look out on the pridelands and says an iconic line from the original version of The Lion King: “Look, Simba, everything the light touches is our Kingdom.” One day, he says, “the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king. It will be yours to protect.” Then, they plot to prank Zazu, Mufasa’s hornbill assistant.
