Let’s get down to business: Disney finally released a trailer and poster for its upcoming, live-action adaptation of Mulan. Now, if you’re expecting a CGI dragon sidekick and a new rendition of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” you’re in for a bit of a surprise. This version, starring Yifei Liu as Mulan, features new characters and isn’t a musical.
However, judging from the trailer, this new Mulan will be full of action, with the same inspirational, empowering message as Disney’s 1998 animated film. If you look carefully, you’ll even catch some homages to that version, including Mulan practicing with her sword in her bedroom and subtle hints of the song “Reflection” in the score.
Check out the full trailer below.
Disney also released the first poster for the movie, featuring yet another visual parallel to the original. Here is is next to a poster for the animated version, to compare.
Mulan is set to open in theaters nationwide next year, on March 27.
